DIY Antique Mirror

I have always loved doing things myself, which is no surprise that I run my own business. However, since starting my photography business, it hasn't left me with a TON of time to do other creative endeavors.

I have this space in my studio that has been had been one of my least favorite spots since I moved in, but I never knew what to do with it.

I finally had my friend, Jen, over to the studio to help me with some new design ideas because she is an interior design genius along with being a mom of 4 and a business owner and a fabulous makeup artist. She's a SUPERWOMAN. Follow her on Instagram here: @sixatthetable.

She says... I have a great idea, you should put an antique mirror there. I follow down that path of finding a local glass company, and I was a bit horrified at the price of 1 piece of mirror.

The cost of the antiqued mirror was SO much more money than I wanted to spend so I researched a way to make my own! I finally settled on buying a piece of regular glass and making an antique mirror.

I DID IT. I felt so creative and saving money was a huge bonus.

Here was my process of making an antique mirror.

You will need - glass, glass cleaner, mirror effect spray paint, black spray paint, water & white vinegar mixture, paper towels, and then a spray to finish the backing with to not make see-through.

  1. Find a clear piece of glass - it can be out of the picture frame!

  2. Clean your glass thoroughly with window cleaner

  3. Set yourself up in a well-ventilated area.

  4. Mix up your 1/2 water and 1/2 white vinegar solution in a spray bottle.

  5. Spray the vinegar and water solution onto the glass and then use the mirror effect spray paint. Immediately dab with the paper towel to dapple the spray paint.

  6. I then took the black spray paint and hit different areas from about 12-18 inches to give it an antique look. Don’t do a consistent spray, but more creating dots/spots of paint on the glass.

  7. I also used gold metallic spray paint after the black to give it a warmer feel; I'll be using bronze instead of gold for my next project!

  8. Continue to use the mirror effect spray until you get your desired look.

  9. After you have achieved your desired look, it is time to finish the back. I used flat gray spray paint to cover the entire back of the glass.

  10. I used three cans of mirror effect spray paint for my project, which is 36x73.

Proper installation is essential! Be sure you have the correct glue to adhere the mirror to the surface. You don't want it to fall off the wall.

We needed to add boards across to give the mirror support since it the hole is a painted window.

My 5 year old son is loving the installation process!

Since I am using the mirror in my place of business, I hired a glass company to install it.
